Gospel Reflection Mark 4:21-25
January 26, 2019

What are you doing with the gifts you have been given?

What good is it to receive a beautifully wrapped present, then leave it un-opened, un-used or simply put on a shelf in the closet?

Each of us who claim the name of Christian have been given a great gift — access to eternal life in the presence of God. This gift of salvation is meant to be shared as a beacon of truth hope and love to the world.
There is a line in one of the Spider-Man movies that I am quite fond of; “with great power comes great responsibility.” My brothers and sisters, as Christians we have been given great power, so to speak. “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12

Our responsibility is to share the gifts we have been given with a lost world — bringing light into the darkness. Your mission as a Christian is to battle the evil of our day.

Part of what we are given according to today’s Gospel is the gift of discernment. We are to Take care of what we hear — discerning fact from fiction and darkness from light. The better we are able to perceive the truth, and put it into action, the more spiritual insight we will be given.

Pray my brothers and sisters for the grace to stand firmly and be fully prepared for the spiritual warfare we will encounter — putting on the full armor of God:

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” Ephesians6:10-18

GOSPEL
Mark 4:21-25
Jesus said to his disciples,
“Is a lamp brought in to be placed under a bushel basket or under a bed, and not to be placed on a lampstand? For there is nothing hidden except to be made visible; nothing is secret except to come to light. Anyone who has ears to hear ought to hear.” He also told them, “Take care what you hear. The measure with which you measure will be measured out to you, and still more will be given to you. To the one who has, more will be given; from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”
